What’s Going On Around The Loop?
|
By Brian Olsen, on October 13th, 2011% Walking around Lake Union is a great way to see the action on the water close up. There are many areas along the loop such as Fremont and Gas Works Park, South Lake Union that hosts the Center for Wooden Boats. Today, I saw a group of men carving a canoe out of wood. There is also a model boat pond but nobody was there on this day, probably due to the strong Fall weather wind and much cooler temperature. It was 57 degrees in Seattle today. Another area on the Lake Union loop is Wards Cove which is a newer development of houseboats at Eastlake.
The loop around Lake Union is about 6.2 miles the way I go along the Burke Gilman Trail over the Fremont Bridge and along Westlake past Kenmore Air, through Eastlake and over the University Bridge back to Burke Gilman.

The walk takes about 90 minutes if done quickly and about 2 hours if approached as more of a stroll. Walking around Lake Union on the 4th of July is a wonderful experience. There are so many rooftop parties on the Seattle houseboats and as one navigates the loop there are different personalities in the various communities. Some are casual and earthy and other houseboat party’s host live bands performing for everyone to hear. People start gathering at Gas Works Park early in the morning to stake out their space and watch the 4th of July fireworks display. It does not need to be a holiday to enjoy the loop. There are many interesting stops along the way. Kenmore Air has a seaport to fly passengers around the Pacific Northwest. One can watch the line of seaplanes approach South Lake Union as the pilots bring the planes in from Kenmore, WA. One after another the planes land on the water and taxi to the dock and tie up. There are also street signs located at the waters edge. Seattle streets run to the water and mark public access to Lake Union. Take an opportunity this Fall to explore the Lake Union loop and action on the water that locals call the ‘working lake’.

When I saw this large concrete Seattle floating home float being towed across Lake Union, I assumed it was on its way to Ward’s Cove when all the new construction in Seattle floating homes is happening. While walking my weekly Lake Union loop, I was excited and surprised to see it on the Fairview Landings dock!
New construction and Seattle floating homes are two terms that usually do not go together. There are times when an older floating home can be taken down to the float and rebuilt, but a brand new Seattle houseboat is rare on Lake Union! There are only so many moorage slips and restrictions are such that it is nearly impossible to add more docks unless exactly the right criteria is present. This is what makes Ward’s Cove so coveted and also Fairview Landings.
If you are interested in Seattle floating homes for sale or information about building a new Seattle floating home, let us know and we can show you our favorite houseboats and houseboat slips!

My camera was out of juice on one of my walks around Lake Union, but luckily Brian had his phone and took some great shots from the top of the hill at Gas Works.
It looks like maybe a practice kite for Kite surfing which is one of items on my life to do list. I thought I was a little too old to learn until I saw a sixty something year old man do it at Jetty Island. Urban Surf just North of Gasworks has supplies for not only Kite Surfing, but also Stand up Paddle boarding aka SUP (also on my list).

Am I wrong?
Is it something else? Like a glider or something? I have no idea – I just know it was windy and we both thought he was going in the lake while watching him.
Every time we walk around Lake Union, we see something new. There is always something fascinating to see. Do you have any cool pictures of things you have seen around the lake?
